Szőcs Károly: In memoriam Gyóni Géza

Csak egy éjszakára

Csak egy éjszakára küldjétek el őket:

A pártoskodókat, a vitézkedőket.

– Csak egy éjszakára:

Akik fent hirdetik, hogy mi nem felejtünk,

Mikor a halálgép muzsikál felettünk;

Mikor láthatatlan magja kél a ködnek,

S gyilkos ólom-fecskék szanaszét röpködnek.

Csak egy éjszakára küldjétek el őket:

Gerendatöréskor szálkakeresőket.

– Csak egy éjszakára:

Mikor siketítőn bőgni kezd a gránát,

S úgy nyög a véres föld, mintha gyomrát vágnák;

Robbanó golyónak mikor fénye támad,

S véres vize kicsap a vén Visztulának.

Csak egy éjszakára küldjétek el őket:

Az uzsoragarast fogukhoz verőket.

– Csak egy éjszakára:

Mikor gránát-vulkán izzó közepén

Úgy forog a férfi, mint a falevél:

S mire földre omlik, ó, iszonyú omlás,

Szép piros vitézből csak fekete csontváz.

Csak egy éjszakára küldjétek el őket:

A hitetleneket s az üzérkedőket.

– Csak egy éjszakára:

Mikor a pokolnak égő torka tárul,

S vér csurog a földön, vér csurog a fáról,

Mikor a rongysátor nyöszörög a szélben,

S haló honvéd sóhajt: fiam... feleségem...

Csak egy éjszakára küldjétek el őket:

Hosszú csahos nyelvvel hazaszeretőket.

– Csak egy éjszakára:

Vakító csillagnak mikor támad fénye,

Lássák meg arcuk a San folyó tükrébe,

Amikor magyar vért gőzölve hömpölyget,

Hogy sírva sikoltsák: Istenem, ne többet!

Küldjétek el őket csak egy éjszakára,

Hogy emlékezzenek az anyjuk kínjára.

– Csak egy éjszakára:

Hogy bújnának össze megrémülve, fázva;

Hogy fetrengne mind-mind, hogy meakulpázna;

Hogy esküdne mind-mind;

S hitetlen gőgjében, akit sosem ismert,

Hogy hívná a Krisztust, hogy hívná az Istent;

For Just One Night

Send them along for just one bloody night –

Your zealous heroes spoiling for a fight.

– For just one bloody night:

Their former beastswithin our memories ring

As rending shelle of shrapnel scream and sing,

As mists of strangling poison rise,

And leaden swallows swoop across the skies.

Send them along for just one bloody night –

Your men of gross, gargantuan appetite.

– For just one bloddy night:

When thundering cannon start their ravishment,

And red Earth groans with belly gouged and rent,

And bursting bullets break in glittering hate,

And ancient Vistula flows red in spate.

Send them along for one bloddy night –

The money-sucking leech, the parasite.

– For just one bloddy night:

When shell-volcanoes´fire the mud upheaves

And klings torn bodies eddying like leaves.

To crumbling earth the crisping corpses thresh,

Mere blacken´d heaps of bones instead of flesh.

Send them along for just one bloody night –

The unbeliever and the uncontrie.

– For just one bloddy night:

When hell´s hot jaws in paroyxsm expand

And vomit blood and horror on the land.

In tatter´d tents, the wounded pass from life,

And sigh across the wind: „my son ... my wife ...“

Send them along for just one bloody night –

The patriots of the tongue, of speech and spite,

– For just one bloddy night:

That, as the blinding star-shelle leap the dark,

And cheek´s reflect the terror of their spark,

And reeking mists are made of Magyar gore,

They may scream out in tears: „My God, no more!“

Send them along for just one bloody night –

That they may call their mothers in their fright.

– For just one bloddy night:

That they may cower low in fear and cold

And grovelling gasp their huilt so manifold;

That they may rend their clothes, and beat their breasts,

And cry: „My Christ, what are thy dread behests?

May Christ, what dost thou ask? My blood demands

That they shall vow to cleanse their greedy hands

Witch now oppress these lands:

That brazen infidels who blindly trod

May trust in Christ and put their faith in God,

And never more the Magyar nation blight.

– Send them along for just one bloddy night!

In memoriam Gyóni Géza

Ugyanígy cselekedett a faluban a többi hadköteles férfi is.

A háború minden fronton heves harcokkal kezdődött. Az ismételten rohamra küldött gyalogság soraiban rendet vágtak a védők gépfegyverei; szeptemberben elakadt a német offenzíva a Marne mellett, és állóharc kezdődött, majd Verdunnél egymillió halottat követelő ún. Materialschlacht, a hadban álló felek anyagi kimerülését jelentő esztelen hadviselés.

A cs.

Áchim Géza), aki a Pest megyei Gyónon született. Háborús lelkesedéstől fűtve önként vonult be katonának. A háború elején közölt versei ennek a pátosznak a jegyében születtek; nemsokára az elszenvedett események hatása alatt ezek megrendítő ellenpontozásai, a háborúval való határozott szembefordulás jegyében írott versei. Életének utolsó állomása a krasznojarszki (Krasznojarszk, azaz Krasznüj Jar – Vörös Part – nagyváros Szibériában a Jenyiszej partján) fogolytábor, ahol testben-lélekben megtörve 33. születésnapján, 90 évvel ezelőtt elhunyt.

Carlo Levi (1902–1975) Krisztus megállott Ebolinál; Kuncz Aladár (1886–1931) Fekete kolostor; Gustave Flaubert (1821–1880) Bovaryné; Vittorio Monti (1868–1922) Monti-csárdás; Pietro Mascagni (1863–1945) Parasztbecsület és Ruggiero Leoncavallo (1857–1919) Bajazzók, hiszen valamenynyien többet alkottak, mégis, a nevezett egyetlen mű révén lettek halhatatlanok.

Szűkebb szülőföldemen egyik ötödik osztályos falusi gyermek magyar anyanyelvén adott válaszát idézem, arra a kérdésre: mi a vers?

In memoriam Géza Gyóni

On 28 July 1914, Tuesday there was the time for harvest in my native village of the Transylvania. In the afternoon a mounted messenger was galloping up and down the field, crying to the harvesters that war was proclaimed upon Serbia. To hear that, my grandfather threw away his sickle high and far and set off home to volunteer, not waiting for a call-up order. The other men liable to military service in the village did the same.

It is known what a great patriotic enthusiasm spread all over Europe from the North Sea through the Carpathian Mountains  down to the Bay of Biscay. The German social democrats who still campaigned for an antiwar demonstration in Hamburg on 25 July after forty-eight hours of the ultimatum sent to Serbia on 23 July suspended the class struggle after the proclamation of war and decided to support the military program of the government. In Paris the socialist Jean Jaurés (1859–1914), who opposed war definitely, was killed and his killer was acquitted ‘as being a real French patriot’! Out of the writers even Thomas Mann and Anatole France, unlike to Bernard Shaw, allowed themselves to be influenced by the war euphoria.

The war started with fierce battles on all fronts. The defenders’ machine-gun fire killed many in the infantry’s repeated attacks. In September the German offensive was stopped at the river Marne and trench warfare began. Then followed the socalled ‘Materialschlacht’, the unreasonable war which meant a complete depletion of material resources for the powers at war and demanded one million dead at Verdun. The Polish fortress of Przemysl, which was the third largest military base in Europe that time after Verdun and Antwerp, where Hungarian regiments comprised the bulk of defenders, was blockaded by the Russian army. A similar trench war was launched at the Italian front, too. Piave, Doberdo and Isonso as well as the places of captivity in Siberia are the scenes of our grandfathers’ war memories.

The strength and morale of Przemysl’s defenders were crumbled by the blockade and the superiority of the czar’s artillery. Since the food reserves were also exhausted after the destruction of military equipment, Hermann Kusmanek Lieutenant General and Commanding Officer of the fortress as well as the total strength of the army under the command of eight colonels, i. e. 2593 officers and 117 000 soldiers surrendered on 28 March 1915. Thus, here the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy had its greatest defeat that could not be counterbalanced by the recapture of Przemysl in ruins on 3 July 1915.

Among those falling into captivity there was Géza Gyóni (alias Géza Áchim) who had been born in Gyón, County of Pest. He wanted to make a Lutheran minister but became a civil servant and, later, a journalist. Several volumes of his poems were published before the war but they did not attract particular attention. With full enthusiasm towards war he volunteered. His poems published at the beginning of the war were influenced by this feeling but soon the verses which became the shocking counterpoints of the former ones under the influence of the events suffered at war and which showed his turning against the war were written. The prisoner-of-war camp at Krasnoyarsk (which means ‘Purple Bank’ in Russian is a large town on the river Yenisei in Siberia)  was the last station of his life where he died physically and spiritually broken ninety years ago on his thirty-third birthday.

His poetry has been analysed and criticized by many and in many ways. It has been praised or rejected. However, it is a fact that his literary ‘survival’ may be attributed to a single poem of his entitled ‘For Just One Night’ which was translated into several languages and won the international award of the British Society of Literature in 1934. Thus, Gyóni ranks among the authors of ‘one-work’.  (Authors of one-work are e.g. Carlo Levi (1902–1975) Christ Stopped at Eboli; Gustave Flaubert (1821/188) Madame Bovary; Vittorio Monti (1868–1922) Csardas Monti; Pietro Mascagni (1863–1945) Cavalleria rusticana and Ruggiero Leoncavallo (1857–1919) I Pagliacci since all of them created more works but they became immortal through the single work of theirs mentioned above.)

This poem is an upsetting depiction of the hell and suffering of war and here the word  depiction is the only proper expression of  poetic description. Further on, it is an indictment against the boasters remaining at home, the war profiteers and fighters of party politics, i.e. ‘fog-eaters’. The poem is not inflammatory-toned; it does not go beyond the wish ‘My God, do not give me more sufferings!’ or ‘Oh, Christ, what else do you want?’ and yet, it is of a greater force  rather than an overt incitement. This raised it to the works of lasting value in antiwar literature. The painful reality of those who resigned themselves to their fates and reconciled with the fact that there was no way out is expressed by a quiet and solemn cadence, speaking on behalf of those who could not do anything but undertake and play the tragic role assigned to them, namely: to die for their homeland about what they may have had merely irreal ideas and romantic notions. We can see a drama unfolding the rules of staging of which are adjusted to the imperial and royal subjects’ codex containing their allegiance and duties according to which one may die in two ways: either with or without honour. However, honour may/ might not have an alternative.

Since we have lived to the age of a grandfather, we may say, indeed, that war is realistic in our days, too, even if for us it is only an event through the media for the time being.

Now a non-literary man has undertaken the task to commemorate a poet through his poem irregularly; the number of poem-lovers have decreased considerably though. Undoubtedly, the cause of this can be attributed to the overpowering dominance of the electronic and digital media of our age what is supplemented by the escalation of agressivity in all social layers. Under such circumstances, let’s pose the question: What is a poem? What is a verse, indeed? According to Mihály Csíkszentmihályi ‘poetry is one of the most creative forms of using a language.’ Now I will cite the reply to the question ‘What is a verse?’ given by a fifth-class child who lives in a village of my closer homeland. Reply goes in his hungarian native/first language on like this: A verse is something that must be recited. This is the archaic and concise reply of an unbridled young spirit! Well, For Just One Night written by Gyóni is like that. It should be recited! The reader feels that the poem read cannot be kept only to him; it must be recited in order that  it should be answered by gods, too.

In memoriam Géza Gyóni
